On Baile's Strand
A series of short extracts from a performance by Matthew Isaac Cohen at Sekolah Tinggi Seni Indonesia, Bandung on 8th July 2004.
The performance is a wayang realisation of 'On Baile's Strand' (1904) a play by W B Yeats (1865-1939) an important Irish poet and dramatist and leader of the Irish literary revival which drew on Celtic art and traditions.
The musicians and masked actors are from Cirebon and the performance, which was very much a work-in-progress at the time, combines the words of W B Yeats with gamelan music and performance practice.
In order to try and illustrate the performance we have selected a number of short clips. We also apologise for the occasional poor quality of the video, probably due to the number of transformations it has undergone.
