Topeng Keras

'Topeng Keras' is the opening dance of a topeng performance. It is a very demanding dance depicting a strong warrior or minister and the mask is a dark red or brown colour as befits a strong character.

Margaret Coldiron writes: 'His movements are abrupt and decisive and his manner is rough and strong, as the term keras indicates. Although to the observer this character may seem to have long periods of stillness, even in those static moments every sinew is taut with coiled energy. Before donning the mask, the performer prays to Bayu, the god of breath and wind, to provide the requisite stamina for this role'.
