The Virtual Javanese Gamelan was launched at the BETT Show, at Olympia, in January 2005, which is the major event devoted to education and ICT, where it was very well received.

Originally aimed at 11-14 year olds, the profile of the downloads since its launch suggests that it has far wider appeal than just the secondary school classroom.

Nearly 50% of downloads have come from primary school teachers, with a significant number of individual learners of all ages.

It has been used at Wells Cathedral School with Key Stage 3 groups, but also with GCSE music students. It is also finding a place in further education with adult learners, young offenders, and even inmates in prisons.

In March 2005, it won the Interactive Multimedia: Primary and Secondary Learning category, of the Learning on Screen Awards from the British Universities Film and Video Council.

The Virtual Javanese Gamelan has been very generously supported by The South West Grid for Learning, The Music and Dance Scheme and ICT in Schools Unit DfES, Arts Council England and the Mercers’ Company, to the extent that it can be offered for public benefit without charge.

It is available as a download from wcsmusic where it can also be evaluated.
