An introduction to wayang

Matthew Isaac Cohen talks about wayang

Wayang is 'the core of Javanese culture...this is how Javanese identify themselves as Javanese, through the performing of wayang' (Matthew Isaac Cohen).

This month's podcast is the first of a series of three devoted to wayang with Dr Matthew Isaac Cohen, Senior Lecturer, Department of Drama and Theatre at Royal Holloway, University of London, who is also a practising dhalang.

As a dhalang Matthew performs wayang kulit, or shadow puppetry. In this first podcast I asked him to talk a little about different types of wayang, the stories used and the puppets themselves and about wayang performance in Java today.

The musical extracts come from his recent performances of the Ramayana at the British Library, with the Southbank Gamelan Players and pesindhen Esther Wilds.

Puppet identification - Javanese wayang kulit are highly stylised but with instantly recognisable iconography. To learn a little more about this see Tim Byard Jones' article 'Wayang Puppets - a Spotter's Guide'.

Further podcasts

Look out for two further podcasts in which Matthew Isaac Cohen will talk about Cirebonese wayang and his own experiences as a dhalang.
