Wayang kulit - The Ramayana

From 29 May to 1 June 2008 Matthew Isaac Cohen will be giving a series of wayang kulit performances taken from the Ramayana, with the Southbank Gamelan Players, at the British Library.

Each performance will last between two and a half to three hours and cover a different episode taken from the Ramayana epic.

29 May 2008 at 7.00pm – The Birth of Ravana
30 May 2008 at 7.00pm – Arjuna Sasrabau
31 May 2008 at 7.00pm – The Abduction of Shinta
1 June 2008 at 2.00pm – The Fall of Alengka

Matthew studied wayang in Cirebon, a unique city on the north coast of Java. He will be using Cirebonese puppets for the performance, and performing in what is sometimes called pesisir style - a mixture of Solonese and Cirebonese.

The performances are being held in conjunction with 'The Ramayana: Love and Valour in India's Great Epic' the British Library's new exhibition which will run from 16 May to 14 September 2008.

The Ramayana is a Sanskrit epic, attributed to the poet Valmiki and the exhibition will include volumes of a magnificent 17th century illustrated manuscript commissioned by Jagat Singh.

The British Library, 96 Euston Road, London NW1 2DB
