Southbank Gamelan Programme

The Royal Festival Hall, part of London's Southbank Centre is home to an unusually large, Yogyanese style Javanese gamelan.

It was presented as a gift from the people of Indonesia to the people of Great Britain, arriving at the Southbank on the 4th December 1987. Since that time the Southbank Centre has been home to a varied programme of regular teaching sessions and workshops for adults and children.

Gamelan workshops

Specialist gamelan workshop sessions are now available at Southbank Centre to groups of no more than 20 (e.g. GCSE Music groups).

Each two hour session can be tailored to your specific needs, exploring traditional Javanese music, composing, performing and listening with an expert tutor.

The gamelan is ideally suited for developing group music-making and team building skills whether for primary or secondary schools, college or university groups, or office away-days and parties. No previous musical experience is necessary, just a willingness to take off your shoes, sit on the floor and have fun.

The optimum number per group is 20, inclusive of accompanying adults for younger groups. Please note that maximum numbers are to ensure your safety, as well as the enjoyment of all participants, and must be strictly observed.

Sessions are available from 23rd September 2008 onwards.

See Taster Sessions for costs and booking details.
