The RCM Gamelan, White Lotus Flower, was built by Pak Tentrem Sarwanto in Solo (Sukarta) with funds provided by the Higher Education Funding Council for England. Pak Tentrem is one of the world’s leading gamelan makers, with over 20 years’ experience and a reputation second to none for the finesse and originality of his tuning. On its first playing, Pak Tentrem named our gamelan Gamelan Sekar Tunjung Séta (White Lotus Flower Gamelan).
It is a particularly large set, with the deepest gong in Europe and several instruments that have never been seen here before. The President of the RCM, HRH The Prince of Wales, officially named the gamelan on 8 November 2002.
The RCM offers practical workshops for beginners as well as experienced players, from school pupils (Early Years to Primary and Secondary), to businesses and community groups. Times and dates are flexible and sessions can be tailored to individual requirements.
A typical taster session lasts two hours including a short introduction to the cultural context of gamelan and a chance to have a go at playing it. By the end of the session you will be able to perform a short piece of traditional Javanese or Balinese music.
The RCM gamelan is situated at College Hall in Shepherd’s Bush. Facilities are excellent, including full disabled access. Groups of up to 25 people can be accommodated.
Workshops are offered at the subsidised rate of £80 for a workshop lasting up to 2 hours.
