Inspire Works

Inspire-works offers workshops for schools, youth and adult communities led by experienced practitioners.

The workshops provide rich and stimulating experiences across 'the arts' involving music, drama, dance, art, craft and design from Bali.

Inspire-works workshop leaders have studied the performing arts while resident in Bali and use their own authentic gamelan, Balinese dance costumes, topeng masks and traditional shadow puppets in the workshops.

Inspire-works intends to help schools enrich and extend their teaching of the National Curriculum, as well as tailor-making the workshops to the broader spectrum of youth communities, by providing their specialist knowledge and experience in a range of artistic and cultural contexts.

Notable projects

November 2003

Inspire-works led three weeks of gamelan and Balinese dance workshops in 14 different schools across the London Borough of Enfield, as part of the Enfield Arts Support Service 'Music Worldwide' Scheme.

May 2004

Inspire-works lead a similar project with the Oxfordshire County Music Service.

Other notable projects include a series of Balinese mask-making workshops for children and adults with special needs at Richard Stilgoe's Orpheus Centre in Surrey and a Balinese dance festival at the Riverhouse Barn in Walton-on-Thames.

 

Resource packs

As well as coming to your school or youth community to introduce or develop a particular topic, Inspire-works has a number of resource packs available to order, which include Balinese gamelan, kecak, Balinese shadow-puppetry, Balinese dance, Balinese dance-drama and Balinese costume.

A resource pack will include:

background information on the topic (e.g. when and where it originated)

maps where appropriate

a variety of colour images for reference and comparison

follow-up activities and suggested lesson plans

other support material such as a dance movement catalogue, musical notation and photocopiable student worksheets depending on the topic

a CD and/or video recordings with samples in an authentic setting.
