Jo Shaw

While at York University Jo Shaw studied Javanese gamelan with Neil Sorrell for four years. She then spent a year as a darmasiswa student at STSI Solo, Central Java, studying Javanese dance.

Jo was also fortunate to study at the Mangkunegaran Palace with Bapak Suripto, where she focused on the alus style.

On returning to the UK she enjoyed many opportunities to perform as a dancer and as a musician, and taught in a number of different organisations.

For many years Jo was a keen member of the wider gamelan scene in London; her interest shifted largely to Balinese gamelan and she studied extensively with Andy Channing and was an early member of Lila Cita.

Jo now lives in Cornwall where she is hoping to establish a Balinese gamelan angklung for education and community work.
